The chaplain of Palma prison, Jaume Alemany, has established a tradition of walking the Camino de Santiago every year, accompanying a group of inmates. The priest was recently awarded by the Consell de Mallorca for his work, and he is well known in Galicia, where he actively collaborates with the Cathedral of Santiago Foundation.
According to La Voz de Galicia, the Mallorcan priest “is about to take another step to establish himself in the northwest of Spain: he is preparing a new pilgrims’ hostel in Betanzos, located in a building that the Church restored next to the church of Santa María, in the heart of the historic centre and very close to the Xunta’s hostel.”
The town of Betanzos, a key point on the apostle’s route with a long history and tradition, has been chosen for this new project, which has full support from local entities, aware that “on many occasions the current hostel is too small,” as the regional newspaper points out.
Alemany is very active but cannot be everywhere at once, so when he is in Mallorca attending his responsibilities, he relies on the invaluable help of his Galician volunteers, “a group of mostly retired couples,” who ensure the continuation of his projects and will take care of the hostel once it is operational.
